Police in Bournemouth have ruled out plans for an alcohol disorder zone (ADZ).

The resort was rumoured to be considering installing the country's first ADZ. Councils and police are expected to be able to push for this measure, which would see a levy on licensed premises in a designated area, from January.

The council's night-time economy manager Jon Shipp said: "There won't be any ADZs here. The police have confirmed to us in a Townwatch meeting that it is not even on the table."

However, in a separate move, Bournemouth East MP Tobias Ellwood has said progress has been made on plans for a levy on pubs, clubs and off-licences to pay for policing.

Ellwood wants a levy of around 50p per customer for people coming into the centre. He told a meeting of a local resident's association: "I have had meetings with the council's chief executive and interested parties and it does seem we are making a bit of progress."

However, Shipp said: "There is no proposal on the table at the moment. The trade says, 'let's have a look at what you are proposing and how you are putting it in place; when we have something concrete to look at we can take a view'."
